The Working Stiffs has yet to be nominated for a Grammy Award. It is not an influential, internationally acclaimed rock group. It cannot claim that music critics have embraced its refreshing, innovative approach because, as a special group with special needs, it has “an exclusive following.” The Working Stiffs is a long-running, remodeled garage band whose members have, separately or together, rocked, or wanted to rock, many of Portland, Oregon's most characteristic venues.
The Working Stiffs is four guys devoted to fun and creativity in music, and equally devoted to not letting it become a job. In the studio, any classic rock, blues, jazz, rockabilly, Latin, or country style is open for exploration and rejection. Live, the band plays many familiar covers in unfamiliar ways.
Aspirations of being a glitzy choreographed boy band are decades behind this motley crew. Every member of the band has laid down his (her?) instrument at some point to savor the good life or endure the blows, and each has returned with enhanced depth and perspective. The unique combination defines the Working Stiffs. Today‘s line-up has largely played together since 2001 and can describe one another‘s tattoos, birthmarks, and musical quirks in detail.
